3. Gunnison to Lake City

I’d picked up an immersion heater for use in campsites with electricity, and we tried it in the RV park rec room this morning. Thing was useless, took like half an hour to heat 2 cups of water, so we donated it. It was kind of fun to make breakfast in this sad dark rec room though, and to realize how luxurious it can feel to have tables, chairs and a sink. I’m starting to see how this RV park thing has an appeal. You’re living inside, you’re within reach of amazing wilderness, you can have your dog with you... and, according to that chalkboard, Mexican Train (dominoes game my dad plays at his retirement community) every Thursday at 1!

Today’s going to include a moderate climb, and it looks like the weather’s coming in in the afternoon. Of course this is the mountains and we’ve had other days we expected rain which turned out great, so who knows..

First couple miles out of Gunniston. Evidently there’s a huge lake here, as well as something called the Black Canyon of the Gunniston which might be worth seeing but we decide to stick to original plan. Can’t see everything...

Looks like Wyoming to me.

I’m obsessed with those hay roll burrito things. These guys have their own garage.

We stopped at an interpretive marker about a journey gone wrong (involving cannibalism) and met a cute pit mix named Dixie.

After thoroughly smelling our bikes and gear Dixie’s back was very itchy. Her road companion was from North Carolina. He gave us cold water.

Later when we had internet, googling ensued... turns out a young Trey Parker made a musical about this event.

All day we anticipated rain, but it never came. Was a fantastic, beautiful day of riding.

Definitely some religion going on here... I suspect it’s naughty, or gay, men trying to find their way back to Jesus.

Approaching Lake City... really nice area. I’d love to go back.

We stayed in another RV park, In Lake City. We had dinner at the Cannibal Grill. There were no humans on the menu.

The RV Park took its bears seriously. There were still no bear bins; they obviously don’t cater much to cyclists. We stored our food inside a building this time.
